Topic: You Don't Have to Run: Walk Your Way to Better Health

Speakers:
Dawn Heinemann

Dawn Heinemann lost over 120 pounds—through diet and exercise—over the course of two years in 2001 and 2002. She has kept the weight off ever since. Although she exercised during the timeframe in which she lost weight, she was not a runner. Up until a year ago, she had never run a mile. The 2006 Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley 5K was the first race in which she participated, choosing it because it is held here in Oro Valley. Dawn has a personal goal of completing the Half Marathon in 2007 with a run/walk program.

John Corbett

John, along with his wife Alice, own All About Running & Walking in the Safeway Plaza in Rancho Vistoso. He started walking and running at the age of 43 after being diagnosed with a total cholesterol level over 300. In the past 11 years he has walked and ran thousands of miles, lowered his cholesterol to 160 without medication and opened All About Running & Walking in 2001. As a Certified Pedorthist, John and the staff at All About Running & Walking take pride in fitting shoes, and not just selling shoes. In addition, John coaches several running and walking programs preparing people to walk or run events of any distance up to the marathon.

Arizona Distance Classic now benefits Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

John Bingham

JULY 2006—The 2007 Arizona Distance Classic will now benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. The Society's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

"I have been the national spokesperson for Team in Training since 2000, attended over 50 Team in Training events and have witnessed first hand the spectacular results the fund-raising has had on research, treatment, and patient services for people with blood related cancers", stated John Bingham, Founder of John Bingham Racing. "I wanted to do more to help! I knew that I had a unique opportunity with the Arizona Distance Classic making it a non profit event benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma society."

2007 will mark the 3rd annual running of the Arizona Distance Classic, comprised of the Valley of Gold Half Marathon, Northwest Medical Center 5K and Splendido Senior Stroll. Situated in Oro Valley (7 miles outside of Tucson) the Arizona Distance Classic is the perfect Spring Break getaway.

"We at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. are proud to support events like the Arizona Distance Classic", stated Christopher Gleeson, CEO of Ventana Medical Systems. "While the number of cancer and serious infectious disease cases increase, so will the ability to perform early diagnosis and thus provide earlier intervention and more targeted and successful therapies. It is in the early diagnosis and determination of treatment that Ventana adds enormous value to patient care in our local and global communities. With the help of participants, sponsors, and volunteers, our support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps to insure that patients have faster results, more effective treatment, and an improved quality of life."

The event begins and ends at Ventana Medical Systems campus, located in Oro Valley. The Half Marathon, 5K and Senior stroll run on neighborhood streets and highlight the beautiful Arizona landscape.

"We are honored that the Arizona Distance Classic has selected the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as this year's event beneficiary", stated Donna Grogan, National Director, Team In Training. "Being the race beneficiary gives everyone the opportunity to not only compete in and complete an endurance event but also has given participants, sponsors and volunteers the opportunity to raise life-saving funds so important to the Society's mission."
