Tucson, AZ (October 10, 2012) — The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training program and Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Ventana) are teaming up to deliver a morning of inspiration and information. On November 3, 2012, at 10:00 AM, Ventana will host a kickoff event at its Oro Valley campus, 1910 E. Innovation Park Drive, for the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and Northwest Medical Center 5K event.
Attendees will learn about blood cancers and how to join Team In Training and the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon to raise money and awareness to fight these diseases. The public is invited to attend and learn about LLS's mission, and how to join the fight to save lives while staying healthy and active in preparation for the Arizona Distance Classic event.
Renowned Lymphoma researcher Dr. Samantha Kendrick, Ventana President & CEO Mara Aspinall, and Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon race director David Babner will educate, inspire, and inform attendees about how to get involved in this amazing event benefiting a worthy cause.
Team In Training is the world's largest sports endurance training program. Team members raise funds for LLS in exchange for the tools they need to be successful event athletes. Since 1988, Team In Training has trained over 550,000 participants who have raised $1.3 billion to support blood cancer research and patient services.
Ventana employees have formed a Team In Training team for the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon for the last four years. A total of 41 employees have competed on Team Ventana, raising an astounding $34,300 to help fund blood cancer research. Ventana President and CEO Mara G. Aspinall, who will be speaking at the kickoff event, noted, “Cancer is every person's greatest fear, with good reason. Our mission at Ventana is to improve the lives of all patients afflicted with cancer. We are proud to partner with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Arizona Distance Classic to help raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancers of the blood.”
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Samantha Kendrick, Ph.D., a distinguished lymphoma researcher at the University of Arizona. She will discuss her personal connection to lymphoma, as well as recent breakthroughs and her current research projects.
The Arizona Distance Classic, which is described as one of the most scenic of all Arizona race events, will take place in Oro Valley on March 24, 2013. Team In Training athletes will be focusing on the half marathon, but the event will also feature a quarter marathon and a 5K. The race begins and ends at the Ventana campus, 1910 E. Innovation Park Drive in Oro Valley.
“We are so appreciative of the support of Ventana Medical Systems and know that this event will be both enjoyable and educational,” said Jim Brewer, executive director of the Arizona Chapter of LLS. “Personally, I'm looking forward to running in the Arizona Distance Classic, especially since I grew up in Oro Valley and have heard so many wonderful things about the race.”
